Dr. Carmen was born and raised in Montpelier, Virginia as the daughter of two veterinarians, Dr. Bob Franck and Dr. BJ Campbell. Growing up in a vet truck or behind the scenes at the Kings Dominion wildlife park, it was hard to think of a life outside veterinary medicine and horses were always her true passion. At the age of 8 she got her first equine, an 18 month old unbroken donkey named Wanda and with help from mom and dad and a lot of kicking and pulling she managed to break Wanda to both saddle and cart before moving on to her first horse, Bob. This once in a lifetime horse only further fueled her horse addiction. Carmen and Bob tackled everything from 4-H to breed shows, trail rides, speed events and even team penning. She also began giving walking and racking horse riding lessons to fund her horse shows since there was no one in the area to fill this need. Any spare time not spent on a horse was spent riding with several local veterinarians and farriers. These mentors gave her all the support and framework she needed to start her veterinary education as well as begin her strong interest in podiatry as she began shoeing all of the family's horses. In 2001 she began her Bachelor of Science as an Animal and Poultry Science major at Virginia Tech where she was an active member of Block and Bridle, the Equestrian Team and the Horse Judging Team. Under the direction of Dr. Rebecca Splan she earned several National and World Championship titles with her team and as an individual. She graduated a semester early in order to spend an invaluable spring and breeding season alongside Dr. Tom Newton and Dr. Olive Britt.
In 2005 she began vet school at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. She was an active member of the Student Chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the Food Animal Practitioners Club and even arranged a Podiatry wetlab with her own farriery tools for her classmates after hours. Planning and buying equipment throughout her senior year, she wasted no time in making her dreams come true. Her first appointment was 5 days after graduation and her love for horses and veterinary medicine only grows stronger with time. In 2013 she completed her training in animal chiropractic at Options for Animals and became certified through the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association.
Outside of her vet truck, Dr. Carmen is usually still found in the barn! She loves showing her Tennessee Walking horses, trail riding, working cows from horseback, shoeing and just loving on her own horses and still spends her free time training and giving walking and racking horse riding lessons. Any time not spent in the saddle is spent gardening, running or just relaxing with her amazing family and friends.
